Life Grows Where Water Flows
Our theme for 2026 carries a deep significance in the Santa Ynez Valley, where the movement of water shapes not only the land, but the destiny of one of its most iconic native creatures, the Southern steelhead. In these rivers and tributaries, water is the thread that ties the steelhead’s life story together. As the Santa Ynez River has been modified, with flow divided and channels blocked, the steelhead’s path has narrowed. Recognizing the steelhead’s significance means acknowledging how deeply the species is woven into the history and natural traditions of this valley. Its presence in these waters connects generations, both human and ecological, who have depended on the river’s abundance and witnessed the changes in its flow.
This year’s theme invites us to look at water not just as something that sustains life, but the force that guides it. To see the southern steelhead as a reminder of how delicately balanced our ecosystems are. To understand that when water flows freely, life follows; in the river, across the valley, and throughout every interconnected system that depends on these waters. Where water moves, renewal begins. Where the steelhead returns, hope returns with it. Where life grows, we are called to protect the source that nourishes it all.
