  • Formally train and certify 30-60 Chumash community members in various building energy professions (including building performance assessments, energy efficiency retrofits and solar installations);
  • Provide trainees with paid apprenticeship opportunities to gain relevant on-the-job experience under the guidance of qualified contractors; and
  • Reduce the cost of energy efficiency and solar on tribal community homes and building both on- and off-reservation by funding the labor of apprentices and trainers to perform the work.
If you are interested in participating as either a homeowner or a trainee contact Lars Davenport at ldavenport@santaynezchumash.org or 805.688.7997 ext.4107. ________________________________________________________________ Energy Efficiency Before you consider installing a solar energy system it is important to first ensure that your home is as energy efficient as possible. If you skip this step you will simply be "solarizing" your inefficiencies. Improving energy efficiency will reduce the size of the renewable energy system you need to install, dramatically reducing the cost! Recent policies at the federal, state and local levels have created programs that set aside billions of dollars for home efficiency improvements. Air conditioners, dishwashers, refrigerators and even small items like showerheads are all eligible for rebates. Many energy efficient appliances qualify for rebates in excess of $100, and larger improvements such as heating and central air can qualify for several hundred dollars in money back. General home improvements such as insulation, weatherization, new windows and doors can be free upgrades with a potential tax credit of up to $1,500! (Photo from EnergyStar.gov) An efficient house guards against rising energy costs. Many of these upgrades would pay for themselves even without a financial incentive. The Environmental Office can help you take advantage of rebates and other opportunities. We can help you evaluate your current energy usage and determine the investments that will benefit you the most. For more information please contact Joshua Simmons at jsimmons@santaynezchumash.org. __________________________________________________________ Renewable Energy Once you are ready to consider investing in a renewable energy system SYCEO staff can help you to:
  • evaluate the best system design
  • obtain bids and negotiate system price
  • explore financing options
  • oversee the installation
  • help you track energy and cost savings over time.
__________________________________________________________ Drought Tolerant Landscaping In 2009 SYCEO worked with community members to plant drought tolerant landscaping and install water saving irrigation around the Tribal Hall and Health Clinic. This landscaping has thrived, and saved thousands of gallons of water! SYCEO can provide advice and assistance in planning similar landscaping for your home or business. If you are interested in learning more please contact Josh Simmons at jsimmons@santaynezchumash.org. __________________________________________________________ Waste Removal The SYCEO has helped Tribal residents and business owners to remove literally thousands of pounds of waste from the Reservation in the past few years. If you need help figuring out how to properly dispose of waste such as batteries, oil, paint, and larger items that have exceeded their useful lifetime contact Josh Simmons at jsimmons@santaynezchumash.org.
