Chumash Earth Day Fun
We started the day cleaning the neighboring campsites and beach of trash. Mariana did an excellent job explaining the importance picking up all trash, no matter how small, so the marine and coastal wildlife won't mistake the specks of plastic for food. In all, we collected 25 gallons of waste from the surrounding area! Not bad for a morning's work! Next the group had lunch, thanks to executive chef, Julio, and his team of prep chefs, Shiloh, Lars and Josh. Props to Andy for making sure our Chumash Earth Day was another Zero Waste event. During lunch, the group got to know each other better and utilized their detective skills to find our what animal they were in our name game. After lunch, the gang got together with the help of Lars, Julie, Ayumi, and Julio to peruse the estuary and identify the local wildlife. Julie demonstrated the finer points of stream flow monitoring to a captive crowd and Ayumi discussed the importance of a healthy stream for the plants. We even checked in on our past restoration work where we removed invasive ice plant. Not only was this a great day to celebrate the planet, but we also marked the birthdays of several of the SYCEO staff and their children. We celebrated the birthdays of Shiloh, Mariana and Ayumi's twins who all have birthdays that fall on Earth Day weekend. This truly was a weekend to celebrate! Thank you again for joining us. We hope everyone takes a moment to reflect on their contributions to planet and how they can be a better steward of the environment and its resources.
